How Not To Be A Broke College Student

By Jasmine Lowe on August 1, 2012

Top Ramen, not buying books, unless you absolutely needed them for homework or open-book tests, and stealing toilet paper out of the dorms’ bathrooms are signs that you’re probably a broke college student (or just really cheap). This kind of behavior is sort of expected of students, especially now with all of the budget cuts to education, but there comes a time when you’re tired of having to grab an arm full of extra food from the dining hall on campus and rush out of there hoping no one will chase you down. And yes—there are other ways of saving and making money without getting the campus police involved.

Get A Job

This one’s obvious but not many students know about all the jobs that their school may have to offer. Every campus has some sort of career center with links to job and internship postings that students can access both on and off campus. Numerous amounts of off-campus companies, and even on campus jobs, flood your campus’s website and are just sitting there waiting for someone to click on it and apply. There are also odd jobs and paid internships (although few) that one can do in order to rake in some extra cash.

Recycle

This is a good one for those people who like to throw a lot of gatherings that may or may not involve alcoholic beverages. Ask attendees to bring their own drinks and, the majority of the time, if they bring bottles and cans they don’t necessarily take the time to throw them away at the end of the party. Just collect all of the bottles after a shindig, rinse them out and turn them in for cash at your local recycling center. You could even potentially earn money if don’t end up buying a lot of supplies for your get-together.

Sell Your Books on Uloop

Uloop is obviously THE best site to find and sell books for cheap without purchasing your textbooks for an arm and a leg. It just makes sense to avoid the high costs at the bookstore with readily available options online.

There are also scholarships, loans and financial aid always out there for you which can be used along with all of these suggestions, and of course just being mindful of what you buy and how you spend goes a long way as well. Just remember to not do anything illegal to skirt around any of your necessary costs.
