Tips for Looking for a Job Over Winter Break

By Alyssa Irby on November 29, 2012

We all know the story; a kid comes home from college and sets out looking for a job but just can’t seem to find one. I know first hand that this can happen, but here’s a few tips to get ahead and hopefully get you a job.

Start early:

Make phone calls and begin inquiring for those random jobs all over town that you might be interested in before you get home from school. You can go ahead and fill out applications online, but don’t stop there. Have your parents or other people you know from home ask around to scout out places that might be hiring for the holiday season. Make sure your résumé is up-to-date and at the ready.

Figure out what kinds of places might interest you:

It’s always helpful to keep in mind the kinds of places you would like to work. These should usually be places where you know about the items you would be working with every day. Identify both your interests and what things you have experience with. These help you to narrow down the places you want to apply to and the places that would hire you based on previous jobs. Do not apply to a place where you would hate working unless you are willing to deal with it for the entire break.

Go out and search actively:

Take your resumé, look nice, and go to the places that you already called or filled out an online application for. The people in charge of hiring are more likely to remember someone who came in, was dressed appropriately, and was polite and respectful, than someone who simply filled out an application online. When you go into stores, make sure you ask to talk to a manager. Tell them your name and ask if there is anything else you could do to give you a higher chance of getting hired. They won’t always have other things you can do, but it wont hurt to ask.  Also, you don’t have to go to only the stores you’ve already applied to. The more places you apply, the more chances you have of getting hired.

Applying for jobs can be stressful, but don’t let it get the best of you. Something usually comes up, even if it’s not exactly what you were looking for. Hopefully these tricks will help you out in your endeavors. Good Luck!
